The Mahavidyas represent some or other incarnation or manifestation
of the Divine Mother. They are in this sense also to be regarded as Vidyas or
different approaches to (tantric) knowledge. The Mahavidyas are ten particular
forms of the Divine Mother, in which she represented herself in different yugas
and on different occasions and her forms before she again became Uma, the wife
of Lord Shiva.
The 10 Mahavidyas are Kali, Tara, Tripur Sundari (Shodashi or
Shri), Bhuvaneshwari, Tripur Bhairavi, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati, Bagli Mukhi (Valga),
Matangi and Kamla.
