Ram threatening to shoot the Ocean
Ram threatening to shoot the Ocean to dry it - by Harish Johari

This painting by Harish Johari shows a famous scene from the Ramayana. Ram wants to march his army to the kingdom of the demon-king Ravana. He asks the ocean to give him and his army passage to the island of Lanka. For one week Ram prayed to teh ocean for help, but no response came. At the point Ram became angry and knocked an arrow to his bow, drew the string and said "If you do not listen to me I will shoot this fire-arrow and destroy your existence for ever". This terrified the sea-animals and the spirit of the ocean realized the mistake and appeared with his wife and her maid-servants (nymphs). They all folded hands and asked Ram to calm down. They promised him to help in constructing a bridge to Lanka.
