Ram and Bharatha
Ram tells Bharatha to guard the throne of Ayodhya - by Harish Johari

This painting by Harish Johari shows an early scene of the Ramayan epic, when Ram and Sita started living in exile in the forest, together with Lakshman. When King Dasharata heard of this, he left his body. Ram's steph-brother, who was supposed to become king now that his father died, came to Ram in the forest to offer him the throne of Ayodhya. He loved and respected Ram and did not want to become king in his place. However Ram did not accept his offer, knowing it to be his destiny to spend time in this forest untill he would be ready to defeat the demons and create the reign of real Dharma. Bharat finally returned to Ayodhya, taking with him the wooden sandals of Ram. These he place on the throne and while he ruled Ayodhya in the absence of Ram for 14 years, he did so as a humble servant and never himself sat on the throne. The painting shows Ram and Bharat embracing in the forest, with Shatrughan touching Bharat's feet and Lakshman and Sita watching. With them also stands the tribal king Nishad-Raj in his tribal dress.
