Shabri, Ram and Lakshman
Ram and Lakshman at the ashram of Shabri

This painting by Harish Johari shows Ram and Lakshman reaching the ashram of Shabri, a tribal woman that practiced great penance in the forest. Shabri offered them the sweet berries of a medicinal plant called Sanjeevany Bhuti, with great devotion. Lakshman threw the offered fruits because since Shabri had tasted them to make sure that they would be ripe, he considered them impure. Ram however accepted the loving offer by Shabri and asked her in which direction to search for Sita.
